Apple’s CEO Tim Cook admits iOS 6 Maps app not up to company standards – suggests alternatives like Google Maps

Image
Following the launch of iOS 6, Apple has been taking heavy criticism from its customers pertaining to the buggy and incomplete nature of its new Maps app. While Apple has been doing their best to make timely updates in an effort to improve the product, the issues are coming in too quickly and are far too frequent. Now Apple CEO Tim Cook has published an open letter admitting that the new app “fell short” of the company’s high expectations. To only add more intrigue to the whole situation, Cook also spends a significant portion of his letter suggesting third-party alternative apps that customers can use “while we’re improving Maps”. Some of the suggestions include apps from Bing, Mapquest, and Waze, as well as the web apps from Nokia and Google. This move by Cook certainly comes as a surprise. It’s a fairly unprecedented move for the CEO of a major company to be suggesting third-party solutions as an alter...

Google showcases its mapping prowess with additional 45-degree 3D views and high-res satellite imagery

Image
Moments after Apple CEO Tim Cook issued an open letter apologizing over the ineffectiveness of its Maps app, ultimately recommending alternatives such as Google Maps web app, Google decided to make an announcement of its own. The search giant went ahead this morning and highlighted some improvements it is making to its maps offering – discussing high resolution upgrades to some of its imagery in both its Maps and Earth apps. Included in the update are new 45-degree imagery for 37 US cities and 14 more international locations, improved high-resolution aerial imagery for 17 cities, and new high-resolution satellite imagery for a whopping 112 countries and regions. Impacted sites include the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the pentagon-shaped Citadel of Lille in France, and the Texas State Capitol in Austin. While most of the cities included in this update aren’t exactly major metropolitan areas, it’s clear that Google i...

Go to the the throne before the phone!

New Day, New You Proverbs 2:4-6 Listen View Proverbs 2:4-6 in Reader 4  and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, 5  then you will understand the fear of the lord and find the knowledge of God. 6  For the lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. Go to the Throne Before the Phone! Don't run around seeking counsel from just anyone. Pray first, asking the Lord whether it is His will that you go to another human being for counsel or whether He desires to counsel you Himself. In my own life I have had many, many problems, yet I never went to anyone else for counsel with the exception of one time. On this occasion I visited a lady in ministry who had been abused herself. I do not mean to discredit her, but she really was not able to help me. It was not her fault; she simply was not anointed by the Lord to do so. God is not obligated to anoint what He do...

NEXUS 7, APPLE IPAD, KINDLE FIRE

Image
When we start to write a story knowing the source is  DigiTimes , we’re always skeptical on how much credence to actually give the story.  DigiTimes  is well-known in the industry, but their track record for “industry sources” and “leaked information” is very much, a hit or miss scenario. So take this with a grain of salt as a new report “cites industry sources” that claim Google and ASUS are planning two new Nexus tablets. The first will be a thinner version of the $199 Nexus 7, with the second being a brand new $99 model. Both tablets are said to use displays from HannStar display, according to the report. Now, don’t get me wrong, I know that a $99 price for tablets would be wonderful, and if Google can hit that mark with a tablet that doesn’t feel like it came off a Walgreens store shelf, we’d be thrilled. For the moment however, I’d take this with ...

Qualcomm Introduces Two New Budget Quad-Core S4 Processors

Image
Qualcomm is looking to give a boost to their quad-core chip offerings with two new Snapdragon S4 processors, both sporting quad-core CPUs and budget-friendly price tags. The two new chips, MSM8225Q and MSM8265Q are both considered “entry-level” in the S4 processor tier. The major difference between both chips is the inclusion of an integrated multimode UMTS/CDMA modem on the MSM8625Q, with the MSM8225Q featuring an integrated UMTS modem only. Both chips are built on the S4 design, support LPDD2 memory, WiFi, FM connectivity and Bluetooth 4.0 using the Qualcomm Atheros AR6005 and WCN2243 chips. The main difference between these chips and their more powerful Snapdragon “Pro” siblings are the...

Rovio’s Next Hit Bad Piggies Flies Onto Google Play – For Free

Image
Mobile game developer Rovio, creators of mega hit Angry Birds, has released an all new game from the Pig’s point of view. This wine-centric Angry Birds spin-off is available on Google Play for free in both a regular and HD (tablet-optimzed) variations. Rovio describes the game as the “ultimate flying, crawling, rolling, spinning, and crashing device and pilot the pigs safely to the eggs!”. Bad Piggies sees players take on the role of the mischievous green pigs from Angry Birds, building all manner of precarious vehicles in order to reach the end of the level, and steal some eggs along the way. The pig-focused gameplay has a lot in common with an earlier Rovio title, Amazing Alex. Players build contraptions, out of parts in a 2D grid, before taking them for a spin in the game world. LET IT GO

New Day, New You Mark 11:25 Listen View Mark 11:25 in Reader 25   And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. Let It Drop According to the dictionary, forgive means "to renounce anger or resentment against, to absolve from payment of (e.g. a debt)." I like the phrase used by The Amplified Bible in Mark 11:25, "Let it drop." How many times have you had a problem with someone and think you have settled it between you, but the other person keeps bringing it back up? My husband and I have had those kinds of experiences with each other many times in our shared life. I believe most men are more willing and able to let things go than women. The popular stereotype of the nagging wife is not entirely inaccurate. I know, because I used to be one of them. Dave and I would have a disagreement or problem between us and he ...

Staten Island president James Molinaro called Lady Gaga a 'slut'

Image
Photo credit: Getty Images Two city elected officials and the New York chapter of the National Organization for Women came to the Lady Gaga's defense Tuesday after Staten Island Borough President James Molinaro called her a slut twice during a speech. During an anti-drug event at Staten Island Borough Hall Monday, Molinaro said he was appalled at photos of Lady Gaga allegedly smoking marijuana nonchalantly during an Amsterdam concert. "Here's this . . . this . . . I would call her a slut. This slut is influencing many, many children," the 81-year-old said. Molinaro, whose son died of a drug overdose six years ago, did not hold back his disdain against the singer later during the event. "To me, she's not an actress, she's a slut, in the pure meaning of the word," he said. Molinaro's spokeswoman didn't return several phone calls and messages for comment. Lady Gaga...

Dangerous arsenic found in rice and what it means for Latinos

Image
0 in Share Share on Tumblr Jessenia Martinez I don’t know about you but, when I first heard about the recently released Consumer Report that warms of the “dangers of rice” in relation to levels of inorganic arsenic, I felt a little heartbroken.  Rice is to me like pizza or chocolate are to many others.  It is my quintessential comfort food.  I have a feeling I am not the only Latina who can imagine living on rice and a variety of sides and being completely happy. Therefore, I set out to investigate a little further. According to the cited research, rice and rice products do contain alarmingly high levels of inorganic arsenic.  Arsenic, when consumed in excess, can be deadly. Because it is odorless and tasteless it can be hard to detect and it can be found in deep groundwater. ...

Romans 5:8 Listen View Romans 5:8 in Reader 8  But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. But God... There is a little phrase in the Bible that I get excited about every time I come across it. It is just two little words, but it is found throughout the Bible and is probably one of the most powerful two-word phrases in it. It is simply this: But God . . . As we go through the Bible, we constantly read disastrous reports of the terrible things the devil had planned for God's people. Then we come to this little phrase, But God . . ., and the next thing we read about is a victory. In the above scripture, the fact is mentioned that we are all sinners, a condition that deserves punishment and death. The phrase But God . . . interrupts the process. God's love is brought into the situation and changes everything. While we were sinners, Christ died for us, and by doing so, p...

Deuteronomy 30:19 Listen View Deuteronomy 30:19 in Reader 19  I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live: Choose Life! We will never enjoy life unless we make a quality decision to do so. Satan is an expert at stealing and our joy is one of his favorite targets. Nehemiah 8:10 tells us that the joy of the Lord is our strength. In John 10:10 we are told that "the thief" comes to kill, steal, and destroy, but that Jesus came that we might have and enjoy life. Satan is the thief, and one of the things he seeks to steal is our joy. If he can steal our joy from us, we will be weak; and when we are weak, the enemy takes advantage of us. Weak believers are no threat to him and his work of destruction. In order to live as God intends for us to live, the first thing we must do is truly bel...

Apple Wants Another $707 Million From Samsung, Total US Ban

Image
Apple has filed a new motion asking for an extra $707 million dollars from Samsung in additional damages. The figure includes $400 million awarded for design infringement by Samsung, $135 million for willful infringement of its utility patents, $121 million in supplemental damages based on Samsung’s product sales not covered in the jury’s deliberation and $50 million of prejudgment interest on damages through December 31st for a total of $707 million. Furthermore, Apple wants their new injunction request to cover “any of the infringing products or any other product with a feature or features not more than colorably different from any of the infringing feature or features in any of the Infringing Products.” Such a band would likely include Samsung’s Galaxy S III smartphone and pretty much any other Samsung hands...

Apple patents ‘shake to charge’ technology

Image
Apple patents ‘shake to charge’ technology The U.S. Patent and Trademark office has today published a new patent granted to Apple revealing how the company has been exploring the possibilities of ‘shake to charge’ technology. Traditionally, shake to charge technology uses a configuration that features a large copper coil that moves around a stationary magnet. As you know from physics, when a wire cuts across the field lines of a magnet, a current is generated in the wire. Shake to charge uses kinetic energy to generate electricity on a fairly small scale. The technology feature already in low powered devices such as torches and radios. In this configuration for example, the coil inside the torch moves around the stationary magnet, generating electricity. As you can see, this technology is pretty bulky, not ideal for a device a sle...

iOS 6 Overview: Phone (Reminders, Replies and Do Not Disturb)

Image
One feature often ignored by smartphone operating systems is the actual phone user interface. Making and receiving calls has become such an unimportant feature of a smartphone that you could be forgiven for not remembering what the dialing pad looked like. The biggest update in terms of calling are the Reminders, Replies and Do Not Disturb features. But, before we get to those, let’s remind ourselves of how the keypad looks. .  Dial pad UI iOS has used virtually the same keypad since its birth in 2007. White typeface with a dark blue/black background. Scott Forstall’s team decided it was time for a change. The typeface has changed, and the keypad is now a much lighter color. It’s a much cleaner, and classier look. Another gutsy move by Apple. The original dial pad was iconic, and instantly recognizable as an iPhone UI. This change shows Apple isn’t scared of changing parts seen as “untouchable”. Repl...

Samsung Testing Mystery Device With Exynos Cortex-A15?

Image
Earlier, we posted a story by the Korea Times that Samsung was soon planning to unveil a new Galaxy S IV , a successor to their current flagship. Almost immediately, Samsung shot that rumor down . But this little piece of proof shows that there is some credibility to the rumor. It’s a mysterious benchmark for a device called the Samsung TE4. While the name means little to us, the processor is what’s important. It’s a dual core Cortex-A15 processor at 1.7 GHz paired with a Mali-T604 GPU, better known as the Exynos 5. It’s Samsung’s next generation processor, and trust us, the Mali-T604 is an absolute monster. Just like the Mali-400 for its time, the T604 will blow everything else away. If this is a prototype of the next device in the Galaxy S series, we have good reason to be excited. That processor will be amazing, and paired with t...

1 Corinthians 12:31 Listen View 1 Corinthians 12:31 in Reader 31  Now eagerly desire the greater gifts. And yet I will show you the most excellent way. Love: Your First Priority Where does love fit into your list of priorities? Jesus said, "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you" (JOHN 13:34 NKJV). It seems to me that Jesus was saying love is the main thing on which we should concentrate. The apostle Paul states that "faith, hope, love abide . . . but the greatest of these is love" (1 CORINTHIANS 13:13). Love should be number one on our spiritual priority list. We should study love, pray about love, and develop the fruit of love by practicing loving others. God is love, so when we walk in His love we abide in Him. Because we walk in God's love by receiving and expressing it, we should not deceive ourselves into thinking we can love God while we hate other peop...

Psalm 32:11 Listen View Psalm 32:11 in Reader 11  Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, ye righteous: and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart. It's Okay to Laugh Many serious things are going on in this world, and we need to be aware of them and prepared for them. But at the same time we need to learn to relax and take things as they come without getting all nervous and upset about them. We need to learn how to enjoy the good life God has provided for us through the death and resurrection of His Son Jesus Christ (SEE JOHN 10:10). In spite of all the troubling things going on around us in the world, our daily confession should be, "This is the day the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it." Something we Christians need to do more of is laugh. We tend to be so heavy about everything - our sin, expecting perfection from ourselves, our growth in God, our prayer life, the gifts of the Spirit, and memo...

2 Corinthians 3:18 Listen View 2 Corinthians 3:18 in Reader 18  But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. Let Your Mess Become Your Message I encourage people to let go of their past, but never to run from it. The only way to gain victory over the pain of our past is to let God walk us back through that doorway of pain and into victory.  No one can achieve victory for us; we have to work out our own salvation. Paul explained this truth in his letter to the Philippian church, saying:  "Therefore, my dear ones . . . work out (cultivate, carry out to the goal, and fully complete) your own salvation with reverence and awe and trembling (self-distrust, with serious caution, tenderness of conscience, watchfulness against temptation, timidly shrinking from whatever might offend God and discredit th...
