Kodak Agrees To Sell Its Patents For $525 Million To Google And Apple Consortium
Kodak has agreed to sell its digital-imaging technology patents to a consortium led by RPX Corporation, a patent risk advisory firm, and Intellectual Ventures, a patent-holding company.
The entire consortium consists of 12 licensees. This list includes:
- Apple, Inc.
- Research In Motion Limited
- Google Inc.
- Samsung Electronics CO., Ltd.
- Adobe Systems Incorporated
- HTC Corporation
- Facebook, Inc.
- Fujifilm Corporation
- Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.
- Amazon Fulfillment Services, Inc.
- Shutterfly, Inc.
- Microsoft Corporation
By acquiring the rights to these patents, these companies can avoid any future, patent litigation headaches. These rival companies joining forces in order to license patents also works out in the long run in helping to keep the price of the patent portfolio low. If not, there could be patent bidding wars, like the case of the Nortel patents which sold for $4.5 billion.
Kodak will use the money it gains from this sale to pay off a portion of its bankruptcy debt.
