Apple is testing a longer 4″ display, evidence found in iOS Simulator

Over the past few months we’ve been hearing a lot about the next iPhone having a 4″ display. A larger display is something which I think tops most consumers’ lists of what they want to see on the upcoming iOS powered smartphone. There’s now evidence to prove that – at the very least – Apple is testing a larger display.
Specifically, the display being tested is one which will be the same width as the current iPhone, but is longer. (640 x 1136 pixels versus the current 640 x 960.) What that means is that Apple can still use the term “Retina” and we don’t end up with a really uncomfortable phone to use and hold. In terms of user experience, it means that instead of the usual 4 rows of app icons, we would get five.
9to5Mac has done some digging in to the iOS Simulator that’s provided to all developers as part of the Apple Developers Program.
Thanks to some tweaks to the iOS Simulator application that is included in the iOS development tools, we were able to run the simulator at the rumored next-generation iPhone display resolution of 640 x 1136. We did this running both the current public release of iOS 5.1 and the upcoming iOS 6.0. The iOS 5.1 simulator displayed the home screen with a stretched set of four rows of icons. On the other hand, iOS 6 displayed five complete rows – as our sources said Apple was testing for taller iPhone displays.

As it stands, it’s virtually undeniable that Apple is looking in to this new aspect ratio and screen size. Whether or not it means that’s what we’ll see when the September/October launch comes around is another matter entirely. So far, it’s the most convincing “proof”, since it comes directly from something produced by Cupertino.
