Bladepad: Physical game controllers for iPhone just got serious

Ever since the iPhone launched, accessory manufacturers have been coming up with cool ways to make the most of our favorite portable device. Whether it be cases, microphones, camera lenses or countless other options. One area that’s needed a serious look for a long time is mobile gaming.
Despite most titles having obtrusive onscreen virtual controls, no one has really put a PSP rivalling set of controls on to the market. I may be wrong, but, the only one I can think of in recent times is iCade’s set of physical control pads, which are much more in line with retro style gaming than modern, popular titles.
Bladepad has answered the serious mobile gamers’ prayers. Firstly, its detachable and comes with a back shell meaning that you attach and detach it with ease without leaving your iPhone’s back exposed to the elements. If you want to get your game face on, quickly attach and slide out the nifty control pad. The price? If you’re an early pledger on KickStarter, you can get one for as little as $59.

FEATURES

- Dual Analog Sticks
- Full Console Controller Button Layout (D-pad, ABXY buttons, Start, Select, L1, L2, R1, R2)
- Full Back-Lighting (D-pad, Analogs sticks, ABXY buttons) that can be turned on or off during gameplay
- Premium Protective Case, which features a completely smooth back (no awkward bumps or raises)
- Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy Connection
- Micro USB Charging Port
- Dual Charging Cable; Charge both your iPhone and Bladepad at the same time!  (Plug the standard USB end into a power source and the other end of the cord splits into a standard 30 pin charger for your iPhone and a micro USB for Bladepad)
Right now, the project is in prototype stage (hence its KickStarter page). Bladepad LLC is raising money  to finish off the tooling molds, complete the SDK to give out to both major and indie game makers along with development kits. If you’re as excited as I am about this project, head on over to KS and get pledging. This could be the best thing to happen to portable gaming since the Game Boy.
What about the iPhone 5? Thankfully, Bladepad’s design team are fully aware of the upcoming iDevice, and will be creating a compatible version.
